If you have an induction cooktop, most nonstick pans are immediately off the table. Standard nonstick uses an aluminium body that isn't magnetic, which means your induction hob won't even recognise it. The pans that do work need a stainless steel or iron base bonded to the bottom — and not all bonded bases are equal. A thin stamped disc warps, creates hot spots, and gives you the worst of both worlds.
We focused on three pans that solve the induction problem differently: a ScratchDefense skillet that tolerates metal utensils, a Thermo-Spot pan from T-fal that tells you when it's preheated, and a Wirecutter-recommended tri-ply base that heats more evenly than many pricier pans. All three are genuinely induction-compatible — not just 'may work on some induction hobs' compatible.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a nonstick pan works on induction?
Hold a refrigerator magnet to the bottom. If it sticks firmly, the pan will work on induction. If it slides or doesn't grip at all, the base isn't magnetic enough. Look for pans that explicitly list a stainless steel or tri-ply base — bonded aluminium alone won't work.
Why do some induction-compatible pans heat unevenly?
Induction only heats the area directly above the coil, and the pan's base has to conduct that heat outward. A thin single-layer disc can't spread heat as well as a tri-ply base with an aluminium core. If your induction zone is smaller than your pan, the edges will always run cooler — that's physics, not a defect.
Can I use metal utensils on any of these pans?
Only on the Circulon A1 ScratchDefense. Its coating is specifically designed for metal utensil contact. The T-fal Experience's Prometal Pro coating resists scratches but isn't guaranteed against metal, and the Tramontina should be used with silicone or wood only. When in doubt, default to non-metal utensils — it extends any nonstick pan's life.
