Our review

The TP20 solves the fundamental problem with roasting and smoking: you have to keep checking. With two leave-in probes connected to a wireless receiver that works up to 500 feet away, you can monitor both your meat and your oven temperature from the couch, the backyard, or anywhere in the house. It uses radio frequency instead of Bluetooth, which means the signal punches through walls and oven doors reliably — something Bluetooth thermometers routinely fail at.

Setup is genuinely hassle-free. There is no app to download, no pairing process, and no Wi-Fi to configure. Pop in the included AAA batteries, insert the probes, and the receiver starts displaying temperatures immediately. USDA-preset temperatures for ten types of meat and five doneness levels mean you do not need to look anything up for common proteins. The alarm flashes and beeps when your target temperature is reached, so overcooking is harder to do.

The trade-off is that this is a wired leave-in, not an instant-read. The probes stay in the meat throughout cooking, connected by 40-inch stainless steel mesh cables rated to 716°F. You cannot use it for a quick spot check the way you would a folding probe — it is purpose-built for long cooks. The receiver is splashproof but basic, and the display, while backlit, is smaller than modern app-connected alternatives. For the price, those are fair compromises.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • 500-foot RF range — far more reliable than Bluetooth through walls

  • USDA presets for 10 meat types and 5 doneness levels

What to watch

  • Wired probes require routing cables through the oven door
  • Receiver display is smaller than app-based alternatives
  • Accuracy ±1.8°F — adequate but not as precise as ±0.9°F models
