Our review
The simplehuman 50-liter semi-round step can is the default pick for a reason: a well-regarded design at a sensible mid-range price. The flat back sits flush against a wall, the rounded front softens the footprint, and the listing says the black body is made with 75% post-consumer recycled plastic.
Its selling points are mechanical. The steel pedal is rated for 150,000 steps, Lid Shox motion control closes the lid slowly and quietly, and a slide lock keeps the lid shut against curious pets. Reviewers like the appearance and function and say it fits standard 13-gallon bags, although the listing also sells tailored Code P liners made for this can.
Opinions split on the lid lock and durability. Some owners love that it locks and say it will last forever, while others find it difficult to operate and report durability problems. Value is divided too, with some calling it well worth the price and others not. The black plastic body will not match a stainless-steel kitchen.

The verdict
The best all-round step can for most kitchens, especially if you have pets. Test the lock when it arrives and choose a steel can if you want the metal look.
