Our review

The Good Grips opener gives you the important half of what an electric model offers — a side cut that leaves no sharp edge and keeps the cutting wheel away from the food — in something that lives in a drawer and never needs an outlet.

For a small kitchen that's the decisive advantage. Counter space is the scarcest resource in most kitchens, and giving a permanent spot to a single-purpose appliance is a real cost. This also works in a power cut, on a camping trip, and anywhere else an electric opener is dead weight.

It asks noticeably more effort than an electric model, which is the whole trade. Two design points narrow who it suits: it's built for right-handed operation, and the large handles can be unwieldy for smaller hands. Its lower rating reflects those ergonomics rather than any reliability problem.
