The imarku is one of the most-bought budget chef's knives on Amazon and it makes an excellent first impression. It arrives genuinely sharp — sharper than the Victorinox does — and the Pakkawood handle looks considerably more expensive than its price tag suggests.
It's marketed with Japanese styling but uses German high-carbon stainless steel, which is worth understanding because it sets expectations. German steel is softer and tougher: more durable and less prone to chipping, but less able to hold a very fine edge. Expect German-knife behaviour rather than the fine edge Japanese blades are known for.
That's where the two recurring complaints come from. The edge dulls faster than premium steel, so you'll be honing more often. And the handle can work loose with heavy daily use — it stems from how the Pakkawood scales are attached, so it isn't something home maintenance fixes. It doesn't affect every unit, but it's the most common long-term report.
