How to Organize a Small Kitchen: A Room-by-Room System

Take everything out of one cabinet and measure the interior height and depth before buying anything. Cabinet depth is the number that ruins most storage purchases — plenty of container sets are too deep for standard shelves, leaving you unable to close the door.

Discard duplicates and anything expired while the cabinet is empty. Most small kitchens have more space than their owners think; they just have three half-full bags of the same thing.

Consistent container footprints are what convert a shelf into columns you can actually use. Mismatched tubs waste the vertical space between them and make it impossible to see what's behind the front row.

Square and rectangular containers beat round ones in a small kitchen, because round containers leave unusable gaps at each corner. Label them — dry goods look identical once decanted.

Spices are the highest-count, smallest-item category in any kitchen, which makes them the worst use of shelf space. Moving them to a cabinet door or a tiered rack typically frees an entire shelf.

Door mounting is the biggest win if you can drill. If you're renting and can't, an expandable tiered rack gets most of the benefit by using height instead of depth, and adjusts to fit the cabinet you measured in step one.

Counter space is the scarcest resource in a small kitchen, so treat anything that lives on it as paying rent. Realistically you have room for one appliance plus a board — anything else should go in a cabinet between uses.

This is where appliance choice becomes an organisation decision rather than a cooking one. A compact unit that stays out beats a large one you have to shuffle around every time you cook.
